Field Services South West  

Field Services South West is one of six regional teams that deliver on the Field Services national mission to deliver a timelyeffective and integrated field epidemiology and public health microbiology service: developing capability and capacity for an effective all hazards health protection service. We work closely with the SW Health Protection Team.  

The work of Field Services has seven key functions: 

Epidemiology & Surveillance – Deliver epidemic intelligence, situational awareness, and maintain national syndromic and laboratory surveillance systems. 

Outbreak Detection & Response – Lead and support rapid outbreak identification and field investigations at all levels. 

Public Health Microbiology – Provide regional public health microbiology services in collaboration with laboratories and partners. 

Education & Training – Deliver UKFETP and support wider learning and development activities. 

Research & Evaluation – Conduct rapid field research, evaluations, and collaborative R&D with academic partners. 

Quality & Standards – Develop and promote best practice in epidemiology, surveillance, outbreak detection, and agile data science. 

Strategic & Operational Support – Contribute to improving public health outcomes and reducing inequalities. 

The Field Services SW team is made up of consultant epidemiologists, epidemiological scientists & analysts, with business support. We also have a consultant in public health infection and a further specialist role involved in laboratory reporting of causative agents. We are also train scientists on the Field Epidemiology Training Programme.  

The placement is suited to more senior trainees looking to take on significant work at a regional and national scale and interested in field epidemiology and health protection.  

The main training location is Bristol, however placements at Totnes could be considered. 

Registrars will have the opportunity to: 

  • Investigate infectious disease outbreaks (both regional and national)  

  • Assess surveillance data for unexpected trends  

  • Produce routine surveillance reports and presentations for all hazards 

  • Work on national outbreaks  

  • Conduct both responsive and proactive research and publish academic papers  

  • Perform strategic work, for example regional surveillance strategy  

  • Work across the regional public health system  

  • Teach on regional courses and present at conferences
