University College London 1970 – ’74. 2:1 degree in Geography. President of Student Union 1973-4. Appeared on University Challenge 1972 and ’73.

The advertising years…

A 25 year career in London, Frankfurt and Paris as an account / board director at many of the big agencies and with some of the biggest and most high profile clients of that era – Sony, Cadbury, Wall’s Cornetto, Birds Eye, Flora margarine, Directline Insurance, Allied Carpets, Miele, Austin Reed, RNLI, The Royal Navy, The Royal Marines et al.

Ended advertising career as European Vice Presidentat McCann Erickson

With 7 years In charge of General Motors (Vauxhall / Opel) advertising across 23 European countries with a combined budget of $250 million.

Based in London, Paris and Frankfurt. Left advertising in 1999.

The years back in Cornwall…Appointed first Marketing Director of the Eden Project in April 1999 – 2 years before full opening. Responsible for all advertising, marketing and PR for the project from pre launch until September 2007 and so can take some credit for the immensely high profile the project has enjoyed and the success that has made it the envy of many other projects around the world. A budget of c £1 million and a department of 12 people.

September 2007 – August 2011 CEO of Jamie Oliver’s FifteenCornwall - the restaurant training disadvantaged youngsters to be the chefs of the future. Saw the social enterprise to a record year’s trading in 2010/11 and the biggest graduation of apprentices - 20 - from any Fifteen anywhere in the world, ever, in May 2011. Turnover - £4 million, 100 staff.

May 2012 – present. Founding Director Wolf Rock Marketing.

One of the South West’s hottest start-ups – specialising in ambitious marketing for ambitious clients and set up to be able to offer a complete service from strategy to delivery in whatever medium –  Wolf Rock is “media neutral” …not led solely by web based activity or by designers. In 2013 Dave was seconded to the Isles of Scilly to mastermind their marketing activity – still a major piece of business for the agency.

In addition, and more recently…

Dave has been involved with Inclusion Cornwall, European Social Fund and Jobcentre Plus in Cornwall - unusually encouraged to write withgreat freedom and flair about the nature of the unemployed in the county and the shifts in that particular sector in recent years; his experience at Fifteen Cornwall gave him unique insights into working with the disadvantaged, NEETS and the allegedly unemployable. This work has taken him to Brittany, Poland and Berlin as well as around the rest of the UK who often envy Cornwall’s more flexible and effective approach.

Likewise his involvement with Eden and Fifteen make him something of an expert in the fields of tourism and hospitality as well as Social Enterprise – a sector much talked about but often little understood. He has presented and written on all three throughout the UK as well as in Europe who look to the UK for ground-breaking developments in this growing field.

His wide experience in advertising, brand building and Social Enterprise has led to various lecturing assignments linked to Falmouth University – Unlocking Potential, Future Skills Cornwall, Inclusion Cornwall, University of Gloucester and most recently with day - long masterclasses in branding at Ashridge Business College to their MBA students and where he has recently been appointed Associate Research Fellow. His often humorous style coupled with wide ranging and long experience at the highest level in business and with some of its more maverick players make him much in demand with business studies students as well as with wider audiences on the after dinner and awards presentation circuit. He is currently writing a book for Ashridge and Bloomsbury titled ‘Branded Britain.’ – an in-depth  look at the building of a dozen of the greatest British brands.

Other stuff…

Married to Anna (freelance TV producer) with 2  children – Hannah 20 and William 19 – Hannah at Goldsmiths College, London just graduated with her English Degree  and William following dad in Business Studies at UWE.

Edited the highly successful “Little Book of Cornwall” in 2006 and “Little Book of London” in 2012 and wrote “The Little Book of Balls” in 2009 - an irreverent look at the world of sport, in the same series.

Two exhibitions of paintings in London 1991 - something to enjoy returning to when time permits.  Non Exec Director - Cornwall Food &Drink. Partner – Emperor Management – Music promotion and events management. Founding Director – Wolf Rock Marketing. www.wolfrockmarketing.co.uk.
